# Project: AFDS008
Localisation : Mateko, Bandundu province, Democratic Republic of Congo, Africa
Local organization : Mateko Mission

Project Cost: $ 2,000.00 USD - Completed

Description :

Purchase of 20 bikes that will serve as a means of transport for villagers. Congolese walk on average 20 kilometers and sometimes much more to travel from one village to another. It’s important to know that no means of communication, such as a telephone or internet, exist in the villages. News is brought by foot, regardless of the number of kilometers to cover. The transport of a sick person is done on the back of a family member that brings him or her to the closest clinic in the village. The bike is therefore an essential vehicle that allows considerable autonomy in a village.

Goals :

  • Facilitate the transport of patients by using a stretcher mounted on a bike.
  • Save the time and energy it takes people to walk several kilometers under the strong sun or heavy rain.
  • Counter the deterioration of health brought on by these long journeys (dehydration, heat stroke, exhaustion).
  • Reduce the extended absence of the families because to these long journeys.
  • Avoid transporting burdens on the head, back and shoulders.
